The card-sorting task is a flexible research tool that is widely used in many of the sub-fields of psychology, particularly in cognitive psychology. However, this same flexibility requires researchers to make several seemingly arbitrary decision in their experimental designs, such determining a sufficient number of objects to sort, setting task requirements, and creating task instructions for participants. In this workshop, we will first discuss some examples of how open sorts have been used to study cognitive models. Then, recent developments in ways to administer sorting tasks will be discussed. Finally, SumPi, a software package for the analysis of sorting task data, will be demonstrated. Participants will acquire experience in creating an online sorting task, and analyzing the data.
